The arbitrariness of the pairing between word and meaning is one of the key characteristics of human language.
all words are symbols.
symbols are tools that represent meaning, tools that point us to meaning.
i means words themselves are just marks on a page or sounds you say, hear or think.
it’s what your mind & heart ascribes to said words as their meaning that gives them their charge & creative power.
when we understand words & their meanings more deeply, we can understand the ideas they represent more deeply.
ultimately help us better understand the expression of God that that word points to on a deeper level.
and from deeper knowledge, there is deeper love.
